Grindelwald Tourism




Teams of different countries are invited to participate in the competition. Only one team per country will be officially admitted.

The teams consist of 4 persons (minimum age 18 years).



Dates and deadlines

1st of June 2019: tentative application

3rd of August 2019: definitive application

(Applications after this deadline can not be considered any more)

The application is only valid with a description of the theme and a sketch!




Theme of the Competition: „Hospitality / Gastfreundschaft“

A short essay of the theme (1/2 typed page) and a sketch have to be submitted for media release. PLEASE SEND ESSAY AND SKETCH WITH THE APPLICATION BY E-MAIL!




January 19 - 6.00 p.m.: Welcome-Cocktail, draw of snow blocks

January 20 - Begin of works

January 21 - working day

January 22 - working day & evening activity

January 23 - working day

January 24 - 12.00 a.m.: end of works

January 24 - 6.00 p.m.: Prize giving ceremony

January 25 - Activity (free) day



Work of the competition

Every team will get a snow block of 3m x 3m x 3m (width x depth x height).

The use of additional snow is not allowed.

The work has to be finished within the given time. All surfaces have to be worked out.

Maximum dimensions of the snow sculpture: must not interfere with the work space of surrounding artists.

For the construction only snow and water are allowed. The use of accessories, dye and any supports (visible or invisible) is not allowed.




Every team has the following tools at its disposal:

  • 1 ladder

  • 2 buckets

  • 2 snow shovels and 2 spades

  • 2 hatchets

  • 1 saw

  • 1 tool to take off the rind of a tree


Any additional tools for the completion of the sculpture (e.g. knives, hatchets) have to be provided by the teams. The use of electric or fuel driven drills, saws and milling machines is not allowed.



Working hours

  • Monday between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.

  • Tuesday between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.

  • Wednesday between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.

  • Thursday between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.

  • Friday 8.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m.



Costs of accommodation and meals

The accommodation costs and meals of competitors (4 per team) from Sunday evening to Saturday morning will be covered by the organizers (except beverages).




Every team will judge other teams on Friday 24 January between 12.00 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Additionally there will be a public judgment directly on site from Thursday morning, 8.00 a.m. and Friday afternoon, 4.00 p.m.




Participants are responsible for adequate travel insurance.
